It was with great sadness today that I read about the shuttering of Gourmet magazine. I admit that I am not a subscriber because the magazine did seem a bit out of touch with my current culinary interests and needs. But I do have a sentimental attachment to the magazine because it introduced me to haute cuisine - exotic ingredients, beautiful photographs, famous chefs. My beloved grandmother - farm girl at heart - had a subscription to Gourmet and I would pore over the magazine, enjoying the glossy photos of amazing meals. It's funny to think that while my girlfriends would pore over Elle and Vogue, I was much more interested in cooking magazines, even back then! So I do associate Gourmet magazine with my culinary education as well as a connection to my darling grandmother Taylor, who loved to cook tasty meals - whether rustic or sophisticated, it did not matter to her.
